Anchor in a Storm

Good Morning {{first_name}},

A ship drops anchor in a storm, and the anchor does not stop the waves. It does not calm the wind. The boat still rocks, still takes on spray, still gets thrown sideways by every swell that rolls through. What the anchor does is refuse to move with the boat. It is fixed to something underneath the chaos, not tied to anything that is also being tossed around by it.

Here is where a lot of men get it wrong, and I got it wrong for a long time too.

We look for our anchor in another person. A wife. A partner. The kids. And on the surface that makes sense, because these are the people we would do anything for, the ones who give our life its shape and its "why." Being a father is the most important role I carry. But my kids cannot be my anchor. Here is the hard part to sit with: they are on the boat with me. They are getting rocked by the same storm.

There will be days when the bills pile up, the schedule falls apart, the noise in the house hits a pitch that finds the very last thread of your patience and snaps it. On those days, if your anchor was "being a calm, patient father," you just watched your anchor fail. Not because you are weak. Because you tied yourself to something that was never fixed to bedrock in the first place. It was floating right next to you the whole time.

The same is true of a marriage, a partnership, a mentor, even a coach. Any relationship, no matter how strong, is still two humans in a storm together. When we make another person our anchor, we hand them a job they never signed up for: to hold steady no matter what. And when they cannot, because they are human, we feel like we are drowning. Worse, we start to believe the storm is their fault.

An anchor has to be something that does not move regardless of what the people around you are doing. Discipline does not care whether your son slept through the night. Love, as a stance you choose rather than a feeling someone gives you, does not run out when your daughter mouths off. Faith does not need your circumstances to cooperate before it holds. Your values do not resign just because today was ugly.

So here is the work, and it is not complicated, though it is not always comfortable.

Take out a piece of paper. Write down what you have been quietly using as your anchor: a person, a relationship, a role, an outcome. Then ask yourself honestly, does this hold when the storm hits, or does it get rocked right along with me? If it moves when things get hard, it was never the anchor. It was cargo you were trying to protect. Worth protecting, still not what holds you in place.

Then write down what is actually fixed. What is true about who you are on your worst day, not just your best one. That is closer to your real anchor.

You can love your children fiercely and still refuse to make them responsible for your stability. In fact, that is what lets you love them well on the days it is hardest to. The anchor holds so you can be present for the storm instead of becoming part of it.

Rooted in love and curiosity,

Matt
